Detailed Itinerary: Premium Vietnam 8 Days

Day 1: Hanoi

Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam’s vibrant capital city. You will be greeted and transferred to your hotel after you arrive at the airport. Your adventure begins at 6 p.m. with a welcome reception where you will meet your tour leader and fellow travelers. Hanoi offers a wealth of exciting experiences to offer if you arrive early. Explore the city’s colorful old district and its charming mix of shops and cafés, or pay a visit to the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum, which houses ancient to contemporary Vietnamese art. This evening, join your leader and a small group for a welcome supper in a beautifully decorated restaurant simulating an old-fashioned Vietnamese house. Dive into the amazing world of Vietnamese cuisine with your guide, who will introduce you to a selection of classic dishes prepared with the freshest local ingredients.
Day 2: Halong Bay
Depart from Hanoi for Halong Bay, one of Vietnam’s most spectacular natural beauties. Embark on your evening’s feature Stay lodging, a beautifully constructed and authentically designed junk-style boat with modern conveniences. Set sail in complete luxury as stunning views of scattered islands and towering limestone outcrops unfold in front of you. While on board, explore the bay while enjoying a great seafood lunch. Learn about the region’s fascinating geography and its significance to the Vietnamese people, visit Surprise Cave where your guide will point out unusual rock formations, and choose between swimming at Ti Top Island Beach and enjoying an optional kayaking tour during the warmer months. Sit back with a drink on the upper deck and take in the breathtaking landscape that will be with you forever. Enjoy a romantic seafood dinner on the veranda before snuggling up for a night of stargazing and story-telling.

Day 3: Hanoi
Before returning to Hanoi, start your day with a peaceful breakfast and possibly some Tai Chi on the boat. This afternoon, you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness a soul-stirring traditional Hat Xam performance. Hat Xam is a traditional Northern Vietnamese art form dating back to the Tran Dynasty. It was originally performed by blind performers and enjoyed by local working-class audiences until the late 1950s, when communists proclaimed all forms of art to be corrupting influences. These performances are becoming increasingly rare, but you and your guests will be taken to a private club house and treated to an exclusive concert in one of the few locations where performers can still sing acoustically. The performance will take roughly 90 minutes and may include audience interaction, so be prepared to participate!

Day 4: Hoi An
This morning, you’ll learn about Hanoi’s highlights on a half-day tour with your guide. Discover a captivating city where old and new coexist as your guide describes the Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, and Ho Chi Minh’s former mansion. Today’s lunch will be extra special since you’ll be visiting the incredible KOTO café, a social enterprise that gives hospitality training and experience while empowering at-risk and impoverished children in Vietnam – not to mention a fantastic menu made from locally sourced foods. You’ll fly south from Hanoi to Danang this afternoon. Continue on to Hoi An, admiring the beautiful scenery along the way. Arrive late in the afternoon in Hoi An and check into your boutique hotel. The rest of the day is yours; perhaps you might make use of your hotel’s excellent pool.
Day 5: Hoi An
Take a tour of Hoi An’s Old Town to explore a combination of traditional treasures and cultural influences from past traders. Your guide will explain the city’s history as you walk through the pagoda-lined lanes, view a Chinese assembly hall, cross the Japanese Covered Bridge, explore the ornately painted old house of a former trader, and visit a local museum. Hoi An was once a significant ceramic commerce port, and centuries-old pottery villages can still be found there. Visit the Thanh Ha Ceramic Village this afternoon, which goes back to the 16th century and is one of Vietnam’s oldest pottery towns. Pay a visit to an artist couple’s home. They were previously the village’s only craftspeople, both in their 90s, and have passed down historic techniques and practices. Continue your village exploration by meeting the artisan couple’s descendants and learning how traditional objects are made. Finally, unwind with a cup of tea and perhaps test your painting skills on a traditional pottery mask. Return to Hoi An for the evening.
Day 6: Ho Chi Minh City
The morning is free for you to explore more of the charming Hoi An and surrounding area. Perhaps visit the market for silk and other materials, or collect any items you may have had tailored by the competent tailors, or rent a bicycle and ride through the lanes to a pleasant neighboring beach. Your guide will have excellent suggestions for places to eat and drink. After lunch, return to Danang and travel to Ho Chi Minh City. Check into your hotel and spend the evening at leisure — the lively food vendors in Cho Ben Thanh market may entice you with the sweet and savory fragrances of pho and bun mam. Delicious!
Day 7: Ho Chi Minh City
Exit the city and go to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a gigantic underground network built by the Viet Minh and later expanded by the Viet Cong. Enter a widened section of the tunnels with your guide, who will help you imagine life underground and explain how the tunnels housed hospitals, housing, and schools, as well as being used for refuge, storage, and as a Viet Cong military camp. Return to Ho Chi Minh City for a tour of the bustling metropolis where daily life takes place on the streets. Your guide will take you to the Reunification Palace, once the Presidential Palace and the site of South Vietnam’s surrender in 1975, before taking you to the War Remnants Museum. In the evening, spend time with your other passengers and have a farewell meal at a local restaurant. Your boss will be aware of various fantastic options.
